I am doing music because there aren't a lot of queer entertainers in Japan. We don't really see any of them on TV, or even here really, outside of Hayley Kiyoko and Kehlani. I want to be the face and I want people to feel comfortable with being who you are.
Ami is a musician, creator and innovator. When she's not traveling back and forth from LA to Tokyo, she's working on her music and creating a lasting, global impact that brings people together. See her story below.
Ami is wearing Uprising Graphic Classic Tee and Moe Muscle Tee in a size S.
Ok, so what's your story?
Ami: I was born and raised in Kobe, Japan and I moved to California when I was 18, where I went to school to learn film. The reason why I chose film was because my mom is an Opera singer, and she wanted me to steer clear from music. She knew how hard it was first hand, and didn't want me to go through that hardship.
I couldn't shake my passion for music, no matter how hard I tried. Which is why I went back to Tokyo and I started over, there.
Tell us a little bit about your music and goals.
Ami: Last year, we formed a group called Cirrcle. I am the lead singer/rapper - and then we have another rapper and a producer. We're really unique because I'm a lesbian, Jordan (the second rapper) is a minority whose spent 15 years in Japan, and our producer used to work in business.
How did you guys get started?
Ami: We started our group because we didn't have a lot of artists in Japan who are successful globally. So I really wanted to make it all over the world. We don't have any management or label. We like to call ourselves "DIY artists." It's nice to have that freedom to create what we want.
How does Uprising relate to your music?
Ami: I am doing music because there aren't a lot of queer entertainers in Japan. We don't really see any of them on TV, or even here really, outside of Hayley Kiyoko and Kehlani. I want to be the face and I want people to feel comfortable with being who you are.
How will you be American Made?
Ami: As Cirrcle, I just want to go BIG. And make music with people from all countries - not just limited to US or Tokyo - and make a bunch of connections along the way.
Ami is in the Be You Graphic Contrast Tee in S.
